martin lysicrates prize

Saro Lepejian, Mansoor Noor and Lou McInnes performed the first ten minutes of three new Australian plays for young people for the Martin Lysicrates Prize 2022.

They performed my new play, Click to Undo, directed by the incredible Eve Beck, held at the Riverside Theatre in Parramatta. The auditorium was packed with over 650 young people from the surrounding area and it was up to them to vote for the play they wanted to see completed. The kids stomped, cheered, clapped, laughed, danced and fell silent. It was joyous!

John and his wife Dr Patricia Azarias had the vision to create this event which celebrates democracy, reflects the Ancient Greek Dionysian Festival and provides kids that may never have seen live theatre the chance to experience it. The Lysicrates Foundation provides the playwright with a brilliant opportunity to see their work activated and maybe...a very generous prize to set them up to finish the work with financial backing and dramaturgical support. I was thrilled to win the live vote.

John says, “When a society is gone, it’s their scribblers that are left.”
